Mice in Your Iowa Home This Fall

When fall nights turn cold in Waukee, Adel, Grimes and the rest of central Iowa, a lot of homeowners start hearing scratching in the walls or finding droppings in the pantry. Iowa State University (ISU) Extension puts it plainly: the coming of every fall often brings mice.

The good news is that a fall mouse problem follows a predictable pattern, and the fixes are mostly practical: seal the gaps, remove the food, trap what is already inside, and clean up safely. This guide covers each step using guidance from ISU Extension, the CDC and the EPA, and explains when a licensed pest professional is worth calling.

Which mice come inside in Iowa?

Once inside, ISU says mice bring in or make nesting material by chewing apart paper, insulation, foam and anything else that works. They also stash food, such as corn kernels and bird seed, to get through parts of the winter. If your garage holds bird seed, grass seed or pet food, that is an open invitation.

New weather stripping on doors and windows does double duty, since ISU notes it can also reduce heating costs.

A note on mouse poison

The EPA explains that the rodenticide products sold to consumers today are ready-to-use bait stations with block or paste bait, and that loose pelleted baits are no longer allowed in consumer products. The most potent "second-generation" anticoagulants are registered only for professional and agricultural use. Each bait station is labeled for specific places, such as indoors only, or indoors and outdoors within 50 feet of buildings, depending on whether it has been shown to resist tampering by children and dogs.
